BROOK MEADOW - PLANTS

BUTTERBUR COUNTS

I usually count the number of Butterbur flower spikes on Broom Meadow at least twice each year in late March to Early April, before they get buried beneath the surrounding vegetation. The following chart shows the maximum count for each year.

Butterbur count 2012

I carried out the annual count of Butterbur flower spikes on 22 March 2012 - about the same date as in previous years. The total count came to 546 which is considerably down on the record high of 859 last year, but more in line with the 597 of 2010 and the 467 of 2009. The decrease from last year is mainly due to a fall-off in plants on the river banks and on the south meadow. As shown in the following chart the number of Butterbur flower spikes remains high in comparison with the years 1999 to 2008.

The increase has been due to the spread of plants onto the embankment and meadow in front of the seat. Six years ago there were relatively few plants in this area, but now over 60% of the total number of Butterbur flowers are in this area. Here is a breakdown of the figures for the main areas.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . 2012 . . 2011 . . 2010

Embankment . . 330 . . 366 . . 302

Here are some of the flower spikes on the embankment area

RAGGED ROBIN COUNTS

I also count the number of flowering Ragged Robin plants on Brook Meadow in late May to early June. The chart below shows the maximum counts each year from 2002.

Ragged Robin count - 21 May 2011

On 21 May 2011 I did what I think will have to be my final Ragged Robin count of the year this morning, as many of the flowers are starting to wither. I counted 163 plants on the Lumley area and another 51 on the area north of causeway, giving a total of 214. This is well below the record count of 625 last year, but better than any year since 2006.

FULL LIST OF PLANTS

(up-dated to 10 September 2011)

Here is the complete list of plants, in alphabetical order of English name, that have been identified on the Brook Meadow site since the conservation group was set up in year 2000. Note: many of these plants are not found on the meadow every year. Some have not been seen for many years and have probably gone for good.

Note, the Brook Meadow site also includes copses and waterways, as well as the main grassland.

Many people have helped to assemble this list, including Ralph Hollins, Gwynne Johnson and Pete Selby, sadly the latter two are now deceased. Rod Stern was responsible for the list of bryophytes. I am also grateful to Martin Rand, the BSBI Recorder for South Hants for his help in surveying the plants on Brook Meadow and for answering many queries and for checking the plant list. Joel Miller of the Hampshire Biodiversity Information Centre did a survey in September 2006 in which several new plants were recorded.

The names of the plants are as in Francis Rose's books: "The Wild Flower Key" and "Grasses, Sedges, Rushes and Ferns"

CURRENT LIST

Herbs = 223, Trees and Shrubs = 56, Grasses = 34, Sedges = 12, Rushes = 6, Horsetails = 2, Ferns = 2. Total = 335

Plus - Mosses and Liverworts = 23.

MEADOW INDICATORS N = 9

I have not yet heard from Martin Rand about a definitive list of meadow indicators. However, here is a provisional list that we have been using for some years. We don't find them all every year.

Smooth Brome - Lumley area east path

Festulolium Hybrids - north meadow west path

Meadow Barley - various locations

Distant Sedge - Lumley area and north meadow

Hoary Ragwort - north causeway and north meadow

Pepper-saxifrage - Lumley area east

Stone Parsley - Seagull Lane patch

Marsh Arrowgrass - "Lumley puddle"

Strawberry Clover - Lumley area - east path

Recent additions

07 October 2010 - Russian Vine (Fallopia baldschuanica) (originally incorrectly called Potato Vine). About three small flowering plants inside the Seagull Lane gate. Clearly seedlings from the large vine in the garden hedge at the end of Seagull Lane.

25 June 2011 - Common Figwort (Scrophularia nodosa) One tall plant (6 foot) of in flower on the southern part of the Bramble path in the south meadow. Water Figwort has been on the list for some years, but this was the first ever Common Figwort, easily distinguished from Water Figwort by its pointed and coarsely toothed leaves.

29 June 2011 - Traveller's Joy (Clematis vitalba) Flowers were growing out of the tangled vegetation immediately behind the recycling bins in the north-east corner of the car park.

10 September 2011 - Field Madder (Sherardia arvensis) Flowering on the side of the path leading from the end of Seagull Lane to the railway arch.

8 October 2011 - Wild Radish (Raphanus raphanistreum) A good flowering in the south eastern corner of the south meadow.

24 October 2011 - Japanese Spindle (Euonymus japonicus) on the west bank of the River Ems just south of the north bridge. Identified by Ralph Hollins.
